From Couch to 50-Miler

Victory Bicycle Studio Offers Beginner Cycling Program

Clark Butcher began his career in endurance sports at age seven when his father introduced him to running. At nine-years-old he finished his first half marathon and was hooked on competing. He went on to run several half marathons each year, along with numerous 5K and 10K races—until he discovered triathlons. Following a handful of them, Clark realized cycling was his forte, and he never looked back.

Working in bike shops around Memphis from age 14, Clark opened Victory Bicycle Studio on Broad Avenue in 2010. Since then, Clark and his staff have offered customers expert advice and training programs for seasoned cyclists. The focus for many years was on racers and those already serious about the sport. However, Clark and his team began receiving requests from beginner cyclists who wanted to join in on training. They created a training program tailored for beginner cyclists in 2017, Couch to 50-Miler.

The new program kicked off in 2017 with a group of 118 participants, about 80% of them female. This group was especially unique. It was made up of all shapes and sizes, races and religions, from all different professional backgrounds—artists to judges to teachers and attorneys.

The registration fee for the Couch to 50-Miler program includes: a Victory jersey and a monthly training program, one spin class per month at Victory, one weekly group ride manned by three staff members, and one monthly training clinic. Training clinics range in topic from bike storage and care to nutrition. The weekly group ride takes place on Sunday mornings and begins with practicing skills such as how to start and stop and use hand signals. “We take for granted that everyone knows the basics of being on the road,” said Clark. “It’s fun to teach beginners the foundations of cycling and watch them progress throughout the training program.” The program began in June and culminates with the Big Dam Bridge 50-mile ride in Little Rock on September 23.

Clark and his team are already getting a lot of questions about when the next program will start. Victory will announce details for the next session after the Big Dam Bridge 50-mile ride on September 23. Check their social media for details.

About Victory: Established in 2010, Victory Bicycle Studio has grown from a part-time project for its owner, Clark Butcher, to a national industry leader in bicycle retail. The uncompromising commitment to service and attention to detail that have become the Victory standard is achieved through assembling a team of individuals that uniquely combine experience and passion for all things cycling.
