Everywhere you go someone is rocking the look. Not the Carol Brady shag, but a cool version of the old school cut. The modern shag is softer, framing the face with textured layers and wispy curtain bangs. It’s a refreshing look after years of angled long bobs and ho-hum beach waves.

“It’s got a real laid back sexy, Southern California vibe. A little bit surfer, a little bit rock and roll, and a whole lot of fresh,” says Holly Woods, co-owner and stylist with Shapow Parlor on Madison Avenue in Midtown.

“Every other girl who comes in now is wanting a shag. I’ve always been inspired by vintage music, film, and clothing. I love being able to give my clients a cool-girl modern version of this haircut! This look is so flattering and pretty. I have been into Natosha Lyonne’s crazy red hair in Russian Doll and Linda Cardellini’s shag in Dead to Me. It’s the perfect look!”

Holly studies each client’s face shape, hair texture, and personal style to determine which shag fits their look. “Not everyone needs a full-blown vintage ‘70s cut. Sometimes just a soft curtain bang will still give clients the updated look they desire.”

A shag is perfect for curly or straight hair. It adds volume to fine hair and controls frizz for curls. If you’re looking for a fresh update, the modern shag might be for you. Bohemian wash and wear, perfectly mussed, and ready to rock!
