Bragging Rights
I have competed in countless 5Ks, 10Ks, half marathons, marathons, and ultramarathons with numerous wins in various age groups. I ran the Boston Marathon in 2016, 2017, and 2018. I’ll be going back this Spring, and I also qualified for 2020.
Highlights
I like the Boston Marathon due to the level of competition and the prestige. It’s the same distance as any other marathon, but the Boston Marathon means so much more.
I <3 Running
Competing against myself is a constant challenge, and it takes a lot of self-discipline and motivation. This is what I enjoy the most about running. I only have my previous time to beat.
Motivation
My family history of diabetes and high blood pressure motivates me to stay fit.
Obstacle Course
I experienced two major injuries. The first was a partially torn Achilles (both ankles at the same time) right before the Phoenix Marathon in 2012. I went in a boot and air cast and ran a sub 4:30. I also experienced a knee injury that lasted 18 weeks before the 2018 St. Jude Marathon and missed qualifying for Boston by one minute. Six weeks later, I qualified for Boston 2020 at the Baton Rouge Marathon with a 14-minute cushion.
Next Challenge
I’m running in Boston in April and the Detroit Free Press International Marathon in October this year. I’ll also participate in a few local races (MRTC Road Race Series).
Go-To Gear
I absolutely can’t run without my Garmin 235, but I forgot to take it to Boston in 2018. I ended up buying another one at the Expo. Without it, my run doesn’t exist.
Favorite Get-Away
Rehoboth Beach in Delaware is my favorite place to travel. It was the very first place we took our twins when they were 15 months old. It has a nice climate and a family-friendly beach.
Best Eats
Southern Social is my favorite restaurant. I celebrated my recent birthday there and ordered roasted quail, mashed potatoes, and grilled asparagus. Their margaritas are delicious.
Motto
Find the positive in defeat, as well as victory.
