Komal Noordin, 36, has learned that finding yourself again doesn’t mean leaving your family behind. Sometimes, it means making room for all the different pieces of who you are.

Born and raised in Houston, Texas, to Pakistani parents, Komal’s South Asian heritage has always been an important part of her identity. Twelve years ago, she moved to Memphis and has built a life with her husband, their two children, and their dog, Teddy. Memphis is not only home; it is a community with which she has a deep connection.

Before becoming an entrepreneur and opening Blo Blow Dry Bar in Germantown in September 2023, Komal was a board-certified behavior analyst who practiced applied behavior analysis and worked closely with individuals and families. After the birth of her second child, she stepped away from her career to become a stay-at-home mom.

Although she was grateful for that opportunity, Komal, like most stay-at-home moms, admits “motherhood can be all-consuming.” While navigating postpartum emotions and the lingering effects of the pandemic, Komal began to feel as though she had lost a piece of her individual identity.

“I love being a mother, but I also wanted to rediscover the ambitious, creative, and driven parts of myself,” she says.

That desire led her to open Blo Blow Dry Bar. The beauty business became more than a career — it became a way to reconnect with herself while creating a space where other women could do the same.

Blo specializes in professional blowouts, special-occasion styling, braids, updos, makeup, bridal services, extensions, and more. But for Komal, the real transformation goes beyond hair and makeup. She believes that when women feel confident, they carry that confidence into every part of their lives.

Owning Blo has also allowed Komal to empower other women through employment and leadership opportunities, collaborate with local small-business owners, and give back to the Memphis community through sponsorships, charitable donations, and beauty services.

Komal has also learned to make space for herself outside of work, too.

Her fitness routine includes pickleball, Pure Barre, personal training, and independent workouts at Life Time. Her motivation has evolved from simply wanting to look good to wanting to remain strong, active, and healthy for herself and her children. “Fitness has become an important form of self-care for me. It gives me time to reset mentally, work toward personal goals, and do something positive for my long-term health,” Komal explains.

For Komal, balance doesn’t mean giving everything in her life equal attention every day. It means recognizing what needs prioritizing daily and understanding that she deserves to be prioritized, too. Still, balancing motherhood, marriage, business, and fitness isn’t always easy — guilt can creep in.

However, Komal has learned, “Prioritizing myself does not take anything away from my family. It allows me to show up better for them.” She wants her children to understand that self-care is not selfish. She especially wants her daughter to grow up knowing that loving your family deeply and having dreams of your own can coexist.

Her journey reminds us that it is never too late to begin again, learn something new, or rediscover a part of yourself. Sometimes, taking care of everyone else starts with remembering to take care of yourself.
